How far in advance to book your session is one of the most common questions I get. The honest answer: earlier than most people think.
I only take on 3 to 4 sessions a month. That keeps every session unhurried and gives each gallery my full attention. It also means dates fill up fast, especially during busy seasons.
Once a date is gone, it’s gone. Planning ahead is the easiest way to get the exact time and light you want.
Newborn sessions work best in the first two weeks of life, while babies are still sleepy and curl up easily. That’s a short window, so I recommend reaching out during the second trimester. Here’s my full guide on when to book newborn photos.
Booking early doesn’t lock in an exact date. It reserves a spot on the calendar. The exact day is confirmed once the baby arrives.
Maternity sessions are best scheduled 6 to 8 weeks out, ideally during the early third trimester. This leaves time to plan outfits and pick a location together.
Family and senior sessions are typically booked 4 to 6 weeks ahead, though popular weekends and golden hour time fill up first.
Mini sessions, like the Sunflower Field minis, run on a tight calendar. These dates are tied to a specific location and time of year, so spots are limited.
If a themed mini session is on your radar, mark your calendar as soon as dates are announced. These can fill up within days, sometimes hours.
Waiting doesn’t mean missing out completely, but it does mean fewer options. The best time slots, like golden hour, go first. Popular weekends fill early too. It can also keep your photographer from preparing effectively, especially for a newborn session.
Your session is confirmed when payment is made in full. The sooner a date is chosen, the sooner it’s truly locked in.
